Conférence - Ocean Acidification : The Other CO2 Problem

The Oceans are salty, but they are now becoming much more sour. The Oceans have absorbed 80% of the additional heat from the CO2 Greenhouse Gas effects, and it has directly absorbed 30% of the CO2. This has greatly slowed down the effects of global climate change in the atmosphere, but it is taking a drastic toll on the health of the oceans. When CO2 enters the ocean the water acidity goes up, already by 30%. This talk will explore how that happens and why it will impact ocean ecosystems sooner and to a greater extent than warming water temperatures or sea level change.

Thomas Gross is a physical oceanographer, who, after completing a doctorate at Univ of Washington, in Seattle, studied ocean currents and turbulence at Woods Hole and Skidaway Inst. of Oceanography. While at NOAA National Ocean Service, Tom developed tidal circulation models and worked with the EPA and Smithsonian on models of the ecosystems of Chesapeake Bay. Now Tom serves the Oceanographic community at the international level through his work helping to coordinate Global Ocean Observing Systems and Climate Change science at the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of UNESCO.
